Did you know that, starting this month, consumers will not be charged extra for paying by debit or credit card?
Airlines and takeaway apps in particular have become notorious for adding a fee when you pay for your return trip to Malaga or a chicken madras on a Friday night by card.
The percentages charged vary – a Ryanair booking would set you back 2% of the final bill and many airlines started to drop or reduce their fees before 2018, while take away apps like JustEat and Hungerhouse could slap on an additional 5%. albeit for a smaller total.
This enlightened policy came about after a directive from the European Union, banning surcharges on Visa and Mastercard payments. The government has thrown the net wider by banning charges on American Express and Paypal too.
The UK govenrment’s Treasury estimates that in 2010, consumers spent £473m on such charges, and as card use has grown significantly over the last 7 years the 2017 figure must be an eye-watering amount!
Some companies may just put up their prices, to cover the extra costs of card payments. Banks typically charge large retailers between 10p and 20p for each debit card transaction, or 0.6% for credit cards.
It is unclear how the ban on credit card surcharges will be policed. According to the Consumer Rights Regulations, businesses are only allowed to charge a sum that reflects their own costs in processing a transaction.
Some small shops charge a fee for the use of a card, or minimum spend, but they also pay more for processing such transactions.

We recently provided the World Photography Organisation with five of our short term rental machines for the 2014 Sony World Photography Exhibition at Somerset House. The exhibition runs from 1 May and ends this Sunday 18 May.
The Sony World Photography Awards are one of the world’s leading photography competitions, the exhibition showcases the winning and shortlisted photographers from the 139,000 submissions from across all disciplines, from fine art to photojournalism to lifestyle.
WPO are expecting approximately 25,000 visitors and Cecily Breese, WPO’s Event Director told us: “We are delighted to be using PDQ Machines again for the annual Sony World Photography Awards. The organisation is efficient and the machines easy to use.”

Spring is in the air and at PDQ Machines HQ that means one thing – a leap in requests for our famous short term rentals for all those open air events and festivals taking place up and down the country.
And just one of those requests has come from FFX Tools And More, suppliers of high quality tools, fixings and building supplies, who will be spending their Easter holidays with their own FFX Yamaha team at Brands Hatch for the British Superbike Championship.
We’ll be supporting their retail endeavours by providing them with two of our trusty short term rental credit card machines while they experience “four days of breathtaking drama” and we hope four days of breathtaking takings too! Here’s what Adrian Walker their Senior Sales Executive told us:
“PDQ Machines is supplying FFX Tools with credit card terminals for our stand at the British Superbike Championship which starts at Brands Hatch over the long Easter weekend, 18 to 21 April, and then moves to other venues all around the country through the summer so we need two short term rental machines for the duration of each event.
They’ve come up trumps for us yet again and we’re confident that the terminals they’ve recommended, which use GSM/GPRS with complimentary back-up SIM card, will be the perfect solution for this jaw-dropping (and very busy) four-day event that attracts around 20,000 people.
Our experience of PDQ Machines hands-on customer service means we know that should any technical problems arise during the championship they’ll be at the end of the phone to help out and ensure we are able to continue trading.”
If you’re planning to go to this petrolheads’ paradise over the Easter break to cheer on FFX team riders Ian Hutchinson and Andy Reid or maybe Shane Byrne, Josh Brookes or Tommy Bridewell on Paddock Hill Bend, Pit Straight or Hailwoods, be sure to check out FFX Tools stand and their market-leading prices.
Look out for an FFX Tools And More update on the PDQ Machines Blog…coming soon.
We recently received a glowing testimonial from one of our customers, Zaini Hats, run by Miranda Harper, about our short term rental credit card machines.
As you can imagine this is a key PDQ Machines service at this most wonderful and busy time of the year. And as Zaini Hats sell very stylish woollen hats, ski hats and beanies (don’t just take our word for it, visit their website!), they’re very busy right now. Here’s what Miranda told us:
“We’ve been using PDQ Machines‘ credit card machines for the last three years for our small independent business, Zaini Hats, and have never had any problems. We use their credit card machines most weekends of the year.
PDQ Machines are very efficient at catering to all our needs and never fail to pick up the phone. Customer service is exceptional which is important when you use credit card machines regularly and may need help with them now and then.
We hire some extra short term rental terminals over Christmas and they give us the most competitive rate we can find. They even send us free till rolls!
The best option for credit card machines by a long shot. We use our credit card machines all around the UK and have never failed to pick up reception and process payments, unlike other credit card machines we’ve used that rely on one network.”

Last month PDQ Machines raced around central London to get new credit card machines installed for Cowshed.
Cowshed provide: “An holistic range of products and treatments, all bound together through our continued use of natural botanicals from sustainable resources containing the highest quality essential oils.” In other words, excellent quality skincare and assorted products that smell really nice…
Machines were installed in a moo-ment!
Simon Pond, Director at PDQ Machines, explains what happened: “We upgraded Cowshed’s credit card machines to our super fast PDQ Machines and our high quality customer service. This involved whizzing around London to their East End store in trendy Shoreditch, their West End outlets in Carnaby Street and Oxford Street and yet another stylish store in West London, Clarendon Cross (close to Holland Park).
At PDQ Machines we’re all about taking customer service for payment solutions to a new level, so we personally visited each Cowshed store and installed each one of their credit card machines for them.”

For the third year in a row we supplied nearly twenty short term rental PDQ Machines to event makers Urban Caprice at annual arts fair, Masterpiece.
Masterpiece 2013 was held between 27 June and 3 July on the impressive grounds of Chelsea Hospital, home to the famous Chelsea Pensioners.
Security is on red alert as millions of pounds’ worth of art and antiques are on display for the seven days of the fair. Meanwhile our trusty PDQ Machines were in regular use as thousands of visitors enjoyed the dining at Scotts, The Ivy, Mount Street Deli and Le Caprice.
And although PDQ support was only a phone call away, it wasn’t required, as Janice of Urban Caprice explains: “We were really pleased with PDQ Machines’ support at Masterpiece. We’ve used their machines many times before, and they never fail to deliver. All of their machines worked perfectly for the seven days of the fair which meant a seamless service in all concessions as well as plenty of delighted customers.”

PDQ Machines supported several businesses at the Country Living Xmas Fair #clxmasfair last month at the Business Design Centre in Islington.
One of PDQ Machines’ short term credit card machine rental clients is Halinka’s Fairies who produce “exquisite fairies and characters designed and handmade by Halinka”.
They are currently offering an excellent selection of Tree Top Fairies for your well-dressed Christmas tree. Fairy figurine artisan Halinka Fraser, said this about our credit card machine service during the show:
“PDQ machines is not only much better value for money than any other short term rental merchants, the PDQ Machines team there provide an excellent service and are always there to help.
I was at a Christmas Fair where other exhibitors were having problems connecting due to poor reception.
I was surprised that their rental agent had not given them a second SIM card on a different network.
Luckily I had none of these problems and there is always someone to help if I do!”
